Quality is not very good; Akoya pearls have lumps, stains, peeling, holes, and cracks; freshwater pearls have many dimples; both have decent luster and a pearl-like appearance; some surface imperfections are present.

Cultured pearls. These are Akoya cultured pearls, grown by a pearl oyster with human assistance (not natural pearls).
Treatment. Akoya cultured pearls are routinely bleached and color-toned ("pinked") as standard industry practice.
Natural variation. Minor differences in shape, luster, and surface are natural, not defects.
Care. Keep away from perfume, cosmetics, and chemicals. Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wear and store separately from harder jewelry.
